Kochanova meets with CIS IPA observers to discuss election observation in Belarus

MINSK, 9 August (BelTA) – On 8 August Chair of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Natalya Kochanova met with an election observation mission deployed by the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, BelTA has learned.

Natalya Kochanova thanked the mission for coming to Belarus. “Our country is paying special attention to the way elections are held here. We are doing our best to make sure that this important political event is held fairly, openly and transparently,” the speaker emphasized.

“We count on your objective assessment of the ongoing processes. It is very important for us, for our people. We are choosing more than a president, we are choosing the future of Belarus. This is true,” the speaker noted.

She expressed hope that the work of the mission in Belarus will be fruitful and successful.

It is not the first time that MPs from the CIS member states take part in monitoring Belarus' elections. In general, the work of the CIS IPA observation mission is an important part of international election monitoring. According to Natalya Kochanova, the CIS IPA worked out its own observation methods and created an efficient legal framework for arranging and holding international election observation. The CIS Interparliamentary Assembly gained a wealth of experience and became a professional organization that takes an active part and sets trends in international election observation in the CIS space,” the speaker noted.

A total of 248 international observers and about 50,0000 domestic observers have been accredited to monitor the election campaign in Belarus.
