Kochanova: CSTO is playing a bigger role in regional security

MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) – The CSTO is coming to play a bigger role as a guarantor of stability and security in the region, Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Natalya Kochanova said at the CSTO PA Council meeting on 18 May, BelTA has learned.

“The present-day situation in the CSTO area of responsibility is complicated. Real military threats have added to persistent attempts by the West to turn our states upside down through color revolutions, to strangle us with illegal economic sanctions. The US-led North Atlantic Alliance is consistently implementing its strategy of eastward expansion. An unprecedented build-up of NATO forces is observed near the border of Belarus. This is the reason for our legitimate concern,” Natalya Kochanova said.

She noted with regret that at present neither the UN nor the OSCE have enough weight to influence decision-making on the global stage. “At the same time, the role of the CSTO as a guarantor of stability and security in the region is growing, and its potential allows it to contribute significantly to ensuring international peace and security,” the chairwoman of the Council of the Republic stressed.

“Now we see that the decision to set up this organization taken by the leadership of our countries 31 years ago was absolutely correct and well-calibrated,” Natalya Kochanova concluded.
