Italy hosts nearly 500,000 Belarusian children for recuperation holidays since 1992

MINSK, 26 May (BelTA) – Italy has welcomed about 500,000 Belarusian children for recuperation holidays over the period of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy to Belarus Mario Giorgio Stefano Baldi said during an online conference held at the national press center on 26 May to celebrate Belarus-Italy cooperation, BelTA has learned.

The ambassador said that the diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992. “To speak about the relations between Belarus and Italy is to cover almost 30 years. I must say that the relations during the period have always demonstrated growth,” he said.

“Since we established diplomatic relations, we have strengthened humanitarian ties, too. Recuperation holidays for children from the Chernobyl-hit regions were launched at the start of the 1990s. A so-called big humanitarian bridge was created, thanks to which almost 500,000 Belarusian children visited Italy in the past years. They stayed with Italian families. This is the only project of the kind in the world,” Mario Giorgio Stefano Baldi said.

In his words, humanitarian contacts are an important aspect of comprehensive cooperation. Interhuman ties have became the basis of the cooperation between Belarus and Italy. “This is friendship which does not depend on the governments and has nothing to do with trade. This is a guarantee of sustainable partnership between our countries,” the diplomat said.
