India names main problems for SCO region

DUSHANBE, 17 September (BelTA) - The main problems in the region of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) are related to peace, security and lack of trust, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the SCO summit in Dushanbe on 17 September, BelTA has learned.

The prime minister noted that new friends are joining the SCO - Iran as a full member, and Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Qatar as new dialogue partners. “The expansion of the SCO shows the growing influence of the organization, it will become stronger and more authoritative,” Narendra Modi said.

“The biggest problems in this region [the region of the SCO countries] are related to peace, security and lack of trust. The root cause of these problems is growing radicalization. Recent events in Afghanistan have made this problem more evident. The SCO should be proactive on this issue.” the prime minister said. The Central Asian region has historically been a stronghold of moderate and progressive cultures and values, he said. “Based on this historical legacy, the SCO should develop a common template for countering radicalization and extremism. There are moderate, tolerant and inclusive institutions and traditions associated with Islam. The SCO should work to build a strong network between them,” the Indian prime minister stressed.
