MOSCOW, 16 May (BelTA) – The 10th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia that will be held in Ufa will help further expand economic cooperation between Belarus and the Russian Federation, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Aleinik said as he met with Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federal Assembly Valentina Matviyenko in Moscow on 16 May, BelTA has learned.
“We are set to discuss preparations for the Forum of Regions. We are going to join efforts to organize this forum. We strongly believe that this forum will allow us to expand our economic cooperation,” Sergei Aleinik said.
Valentina Matviyenko added that interregional cooperation is developing very effectively through the Council of the Republic and the Federation Council. “Forums of regions supported by our heads of state have appeared to be an efficient tool to promote interregional contacts and emphasize their importance. We are busy preparing for the tenth anniversary edition of the Forum of Regions that will be held in Bashkortostan on 26-28 June,” Valentina Matviyenko noted.
“Major agreements are usually signed at this forum. The previous edition of the forum was held at a very high level in Belarus, in Grodno. The agreements signed there were estimated at more than $1 billion, all of them are being implemented,” Valentina Matviyenko emphasized.
Sergei Aleinik is on an official visit to Moscow on 15-17 May at the invitation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. On 16 May, he also held a meeting with Speaker of the Russian State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin. Talks between the foreign ministers of Belarus and Russia are scheduled for 17 May.
