First reading for Belarus' bill on parties expected in 2020

MINSK, 17 February (BelTA) - The bill on parties can have the first reading in the Parliament in 2020, Belarus' Justice Minister Oleg Slizhevsky said in an interview with the STV channel on 16 February, BelTA has learned.

The public discussion of the bill “On amending the laws on political parties and other public associations” concluded in August 2019. It was submitted to the government in September and sent to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly in December.

According to the minister, the bill does not contain any drastic changes. “Of course, public organizations and political parties offer more measures that are of interest to them. A certain compromise has been found. The wording of the bill has been approved by all,” Oleg Slizhevsky said.

The document can have the first reading as early as this year, he added.

As it has been reported, the bill provides for improving approaches to the establishment and activities of public associations, political parties, their organizational structures, unions. It is proposed to simplify the procedures of obtaining a legal address and distribution of funds, to increase transparency of their activities. Plans are in place to amend the approaches to the establishment and the activities of public associations that have different statuses.
