Expert: Initiative on EAEU leaders' meeting corresponds to present-day challenges

MINSK, 1 April (BelTA) - The initiative on the meeting of the Eurasian Economic Union leaders corresponds to the present-day challenges, Dmitry Golubnichy, analyst with the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research (BISR), said in an interview to the First National Channel of the Belarusian Radio, BelTA has learned.

The BISR analyst expressed his opinion about the possible meeting of the EAEU leaders to discuss the current economic challenges. Dmitry Golubnichy believes that the activity within integration associations should increase during the crisis. Taking into account the growing complexity of epidemiological, energy and economic components, the initiative meets the present-day challenges. This is what the integration is created for. A partnership of such a high level serves as joint absorption of emerging risks, the expert stressed.

It is important that the initiative be supported and have a positive effect on the member states. This is the frequently cited issue of a common market free of withdrawals and restrictions. Given the seriousness of the existing infectious threat, an agreement on epidemiological measures is likely to highlight the agenda of a possible meeting, the expert said.

Since 1 January 2020 Belarus has been presiding over the bodies of the Eurasian Economic Union such as the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council and the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission. We can expect a significant increase in the activity of the Belarusian side in the near future. First of all, it can be explained by the formula that has already been established in international practice according to which presidency in various bodies leads to the strengthening of the country's activity in promoting national interests.

As BelTA reported earlier, on 31 March a telephone conversation between the Belarusian president and the prime minister of Armenia took place on Armenia's initiative. Aleksandr Lukashenko and Nikol Pashinyan discussed the possible meeting of the EAEU leaders among other things. Aleksandr Lukashenko put forward the initiative as the leader of the country presiding over the Eurasian Economic Union. The Belarusian leader stressed that there are urgent issues that require detailed discussion at the highest level.

After the talks Aleksandr Lukashenko instructed Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Mikhail Myasnikovich to discuss the matter with each side and convey the views Aleksandr Lukashenko and Nikol Pashinyan had presented. If the EAEU heads of state agree, Belarus suggests arranging a meeting of only limited-size delegations and can guarantee full safety to every member of the incoming delegations. A video conference the Eurasian Economic Union leaders can participate in is an alternative way for having this discussion, the Belarusian side believes.
