Expert: Belarusian state does not shy away from political reforms

MINSK, 19 October (BelTA) – The Belarusian state does not shy away from reforming the political system, political expert Aleksei Belyayev said in an interview to Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

So-called dialogue platforms have been set up in Belarus to discuss the country's development prospects, including the constitutional reform. All the proposals will be accumulated and then submitted to a higher level.

“This week I have held three meetings as part of such dialogue platforms. Such a form of the dialogue shows that our state listens to what is said. No one shies away from the issues related to the political system reforms. Everyone understands the importance of these issues, and everyone is invited to take part in the dialogue,” Aleksei Belyayev said.

He added that representatives of the opposition were invited to one of such meetings, but they were not ready for the dialogue. “In my opinion, it is not only and not so much about the personality of the president. The point is that Belarus' political system should significantly differ from what it was in the mid-1990s: we have moved from a society of crisis into a society that is more or less prosperous. Modernization, liberalization, and democratization of our political system is what matters today,” the political expert said.

Dmitry Zhuk, Director - Editor in Chief of the Belarus Segodnya publishing house, noted in turn that “the government is not a solidified monolithic structure but a system ready to evolve”. In his words, the ultimatum behavior of a certain part of the opposition shows only that these people do not think about the development of society and the country. “They are clearing the way for a new master who will bring his model,” he believes.
