Dodon: Most Moldovans look forward to closer cooperation with Eurasian Economic Union

INSK, 11 December (BelTA) - Most Moldovans hope for further cooperation and closer cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union, Moldova President Igor Dodon said at the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, BelTA has learned.

In 2018, Moldova became the first country to gain observer status at the EAEU and remains committed to continued cooperation with the union. "Most citizens of Moldova look forward to further cooperation and closer cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union," Igor Dodon said.

"I hope that the president-elect of Moldova, who is to take office in two weeks, will continue cooperation with the countries of the union which is turning into an attractive integration association, one of the world centers of economic power," the head of state said.

He noted that 2021 will be a difficult year for Moldova in view of the pandemic and economic crisis. “We are looking at a very difficult political situation at the end of this year - early next year. Most likely, we will have early parliamentary elections in 2021. But I want to reaffirm that the majority of Moldovans are in favor of a balanced foreign policy and continued cooperation with the EAEU countries,” Igor Dodon noted.

Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko thanked Igor Dodon for his significant contribution to the development of Moldova's relations with the EAEU. “We know that you worked to improve relations with the EAEU. Probably no one in Moldova was more committed to such a policy than you. Your role is great. You are the leading politician in Moldova,” the Belarusian head of state said. “You are not quitting politics. I am sure you will play an even greater role in politics because of the political structure that Moldova has.”
