Dodon: Moldova can become bridge between EU, EAEU

MINSK, 16 May (BelTA) – Obtaining an observer status at the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is a great achievement, Moldova President Igor Dodon said at a press briefing, TASS has reported.

“We will be friends with everyone, on the basis of our national interests. Having obtained the observer status, Moldova can become a bridge between the EU and the EAEU,” Igor Dodon said.

According to him, the procedure for obtaining the status at the EAEU has been designed at the request of Moldova. “I know that other countries have already sent applications for the same status,” the Moldova president noted.

When asked about further steps and possible membership in the EAEU, the Moldovan president said that such matters should be put up for a referendum.

Moldova was granted observer status at the recent EAEU summit in Sochi. Igor Dodon, who attended the summit, said that the sustainable development of the Moldovan economy cannot be achieved without the traditional trade ties within the CIS, which, he said, waned in recent years. The drive for stronger ties within the CIS and the EAEU is supported by the vast majority of the population, he added.
