Development of Belarus-Germany cooperation strategy under consideration

MINSK, 21 October (BelTA) – Belarus and Germany will consider the possibility of starting a special consultation format for working out a roadmap to guide bilateral cooperation. The relevant agreement was reached as Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei met with German Minister of Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas on 21 October, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei is in Germany on a working visit on 21-22 October. He met with his German counterpart on 21 October. The diplomats discussed a broad range of matters of bilateral cooperation, including the advancement of the political dialogue, the development of trade, economic, and investment cooperation.

In particular, the two sides agreed to consider the possibility of starting a special consultation format for working out a strategic vision and a roadmap on future bilateral cooperation in various fields. Close attention was paid to problems of the historic dialogue and reconciliation in the context of implementation of the relevant agreements reached by the presidents of Belarus and Germany. This is why the sides noted with satisfaction the establishment of the joint commission of historians, which is supposed to start working in early 2020.

Vladimir Makei and Heiko Maas exchanged opinions about Belarus' relations with the European Union, the regional situation, including the peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis as well as interaction in international organizations. The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects Germany's active support for Belarus' broader cooperation with the European Union, including the development and signing of the framework agreement. Vladimir Makei assured the Belarusian side is ready to provide all kinds of assistance with hosting negotiations on Ukraine in Minsk in the Normandy format and within the framework of the trilateral contact group under the OSCE aegis. Vladimir Makei also backed Germany's initiative to launch an alliance for multilateralism in order to promote multilateral diplomacy.

Vladimir Makei met with Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the German parliament Norbert Rottgen. The sides discussed matters of international and regional security, transatlantic relations and European cooperation, the common challenges Belarus and Germany share, and possible joint actions.

Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei met with members of the German-Belarusian parliamentary group of the German parliament, which includes representatives of all factions. An open and concerned exchange of opinions regarding the state of Belarusian-German relations and Belarusian-European relations took place. All participants stressed the important role the parliamentary dimension plays in advancing the bilateral dialogue and cooperation.

Vladimir Makei met with Managing Director of the German Eastern Business Association (OAOEV) Ute Kochlowski-Kadjaia and representatives of the German private sector. Matters of bilateral trade, economic, and investment cooperation were discussed as well as ways to step up interaction between German companies and Belarusian ones. In particular, Vladimir Makei underlined the importance of joint efforts to further increase Belarus-Germany trade. He emphasized Belarus' comparative advantages and opportunities for German investors, in particular, in the China-Belarus industrial park Great Stone and the Hi-Tech Park.
