Deputy minister: Sanctions against Belarus are contrary to international law

MINSK, 15 December (BelTA) – Sanctions against Belarus are contrary to generally recognized norms and international law, Natalya Filippova, First Deputy Justice Minister, plenipotentiary representative of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus at the Constitutional Court, told reporters after the announcement of the Constitutional Court's decision on the case “On compliance with generally recognized principles and norms of international law of documents adopted (issued) by the European Union and some foreign states and their government agencies on introducing restrictive measures against the Republic of Belarus”, BelTA has learned.

The Council of Ministers initiated the examination by the Constitutional Court of the compliance of the documents introducing restrictive measures against the Republic of Belarus adopted (issued) by the European Union and some foreign states and their government agencies with the generally recognized principles and norms of international law. “Rather scrupulous preparatory work was carried out, and all the so-called sanctions were measured against the generally recognized norms and principles of international law enshrined in the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and a number of other universal and regional international documents,” Natalya Filippova said.

According to her, the position of the Constitutional Court should be “a guideline for all decision-makers among government agencies and officials without exception responsible for defending national interests, ensuring the protection of the rights and interests of all Belarusian citizens and legal entities enshrined in the Constitution. I believe that the conclusions of the Constitutional Court will help us to reach out to foreign colleagues and communicate the position of the Republic of Belarus. We strongly believe that the unilateral sanctions introduced against the Republic of Belarus are contrary to all generally recognized norms and international law,” Natalya Filippova said.
