ASTANA, 8 November (BelTA) – The decision on the appointment of the new CSTO secretary general was postponed till the next meeting of the presidents in St. Petersburg in December, Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev told the media after the CSTO summit in Astana on 8 November, BelTA has learned.

“Armenian representative Yuri Khatchaturov, who served as the CSTO secretary general, was recalled. This is up for Armenia to decide. In line with the charter, Belarus goes next, in alphabetic order,” Nursultan Nazarbayev noted.

According to him, Armenia would like to appoint a new representative for the remaining period. “But all the heads of state said that only one year is left till the term of office of Armenia's representative expires. The new candidate from Armenia would not have enough time to tour the countries. We need a full-fledged secretary general. Belarus is next in line to appoint its representative to this position,” Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

“We decided to postpone this issue till 6 December when we meet in St. Petersburg. Then we will make a final decision,” he added.
