CIS military cooperation concept adopted

MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – The CIS states have adopted a concept of military cooperation for the period till 2025, BelTA has learned.

The decision was made as a result of the videoconference session of the CIS Heads of State Council on 18 December. The sides reconciled goals, main tasks, the content and directions of development of multilateral military cooperation. Common approaches to material, technical, and financial support were worked out.

The priorities of military cooperation in the Commonwealth of Independent States include efforts to preserve good neighborly relations, confidence-building measures, assistance with the development of national armed forces, efforts to ensure joint security and national security. Cooperation will advance on the basis of the effective international legal base that tends to rapidly develop.

Support for the stable dynamics of cooperation of the CIS member states in defense and military security for the sake of ensuring stable and harmonious development of the CIS states and the commonwealth as a whole is the key goal of military cooperation within the framework of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Plans have been made to gradually accomplish the mutually dependent tasks the concept has laid down. Military cooperation tasks may be adjusted taking into account needs of development of the national armies of the CIS states.

Priority avenues of cooperation include military cooperation, military political cooperation, military technology cooperation, military humanitarian sphere, counteraction of international terrorism and other modern threats and challenges of military nature, military education, training of military personnel, development of military science, peacemaking efforts, and the social and legal sphere. Modern technologies and the accumulated experience of military cooperation will be broadly used in the course of perfecting forms of interaction.

Apart from that, the document specifies an organizational and legal mechanism of military cooperation that allows interested states (members, observer states, and dialogue partners) to get involved in multilateral military cooperation and participate in events taking into account national interests.

New impulses to advance military cooperation are expected to radically change efforts meant to reinforce the national armed forces and ensure safe and harmonious development of the CIS member states.
