CIS leaders pass statement on 75th anniversary of UN foundation

MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – The heads of state of the Commonwealth of Independent States have released a joint statement on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of foundation of the United Nations Organization, BelTA has learned.

The document was passed at the 18 December videoconference session of the CIS Heads of State Council. The statement reads that the United Nations Organization represents a universal instrument for a collective search for answers to challenges and threats of the modern age. It also reaffirms dedication to further enhancement of the United Nations Organization's central coordinating role in ensuring peace and security on the planet.

The document calls for stepping up mutual trust at the regional level and the global one. It also calls for advancing all-round, equal, and mutually beneficial cooperation in the international community and for reaching common and lasting security taking into account legal interests of all countries.

The CIS states support goals of multilateral cooperation in preserving international peace and security. They also support efforts to assist with the sustainable development and respect human rights and basic freedoms.

The CIS leaders also noted it is necessary to advance cooperation between the Commonwealth of Independent States and the United Nations Organization on topical international problems of mutual interest.

Uzbekistan presides over the Commonwealth of Independent States this year. The country is supposed to distribute the text of the joint statement as an official document of the UN General Assembly.

Belarus will take over the CIS presidency in 2021. The decision was backed by all participants of the CIS Heads of State Council session.
