China condemns using human rights as pretext to put pressure on Belarus

MINSK, 26 March (BelTA) – China has consistently opposed interference in domestic affairs and the undermining of the sovereignty of other countries under the pretext of protecting human rights, said Ambassador Chen Xu, Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations Office in Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland. The diplomat made this statement as he addressed the UN Human Rights Council meeting held in Geneva on 24 March, BelTA learned from the Chinese Embassy in Belarus.

The Chinese delegation voted against the draft resolution on human rights in Belarus submitted by the EU countries.

Chen Xu said that the resolution “disregards the efforts and achievements of the Belarusian government to promote and protect human rights, and uses human rights as a pretext to exert pressure and to interfere in the domestic affairs of Belarus. Such a politicization of human rights issues will only undermine the credibility of the UN Human Rights Council”.

Chen Xu noted that the earlier frequent intervention of some countries that sponsored the draft resolution had led to regional instability. These states do not only turn a blind eye to this, but also introduce unilateral coercive measures against other countries, including Belarus, under the pretext of protecting human rights, in fact, seriously undermining the rights of residents of the respective countries.
