Call to prevent Eurasian Economic Union integration from backsliding

MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) – Even small elements geared towards disintegration must not be tolerated in the Eurasian Economic Union. Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Mikhail Myasnikovich made the statement after meeting with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 27 February, BelTA has learned.

Mikhail Myasnikovich stressed: “I understand it and Aleksandr Lukashenko drew attention to the matter with concern: we cannot allow even small elements geared towards disintegration. We should make the Eurasian Economic Union ever stronger at all levels. Belarus has always demonstrated a concrete contribution to the advancement of integration, not only during the year of its presidency. As the president said, Belarus will continue demonstrating it in the future.”

In his words, if one of the countries starts dominating the union, it is detrimental to the situation as a whole. “Countries with a lower level of economic development, in particular, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia, expect more attention and support for their economies within limits of the permitted tools of the Eurasian Economic Union. Kazakhstan feels very confident in the Eurasian Economic Union. Just like Belarus it primarily relies on its own strengths and is eager to secure a synergy effect in addition to an active stance in the Eurasian Economic Union,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said.

“The union is like a family. We should trust each other as part of this family. We have yet to secure complete trust. The absence of trust leads to all kinds of barriers, exemptions, restrictions, which result in an avalanche that may demolish the entire edifice,” Mikhail Myasnikovich concluded.
