Call on CSTO to unite efforts against COVID-19

MOSCOW, 26 May (BelTA) – The CSTO foreign ministers call on the CSTO member state to unite efforts to combat COVID-19, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said following the videoconference meeting of the CSTO Ministerial Council on 26 May, BelTA has learned.

Sergey Lavrov noted that the participants of the meeting could not avoid the discussion of the interaction amid the coronavirus pandemic and had to make adjustments to the agenda of the meeting. “The situation has confirmed that we need a system to respond to biological security threats, or speaking as a whole, we need to work together within our common epidemiological space. In the context of today's crisis we consider it especially necessary to unite efforts and coordinate collective steps. My colleagues and I are unanimous that the CSTO statement on solidarity and mutual assistance in the fight against coronavirus fully reflects the fundamental and consistent development of our organization,” Sergey Lavrov said.

Sergey Lavrov said that the statement adopted by the CSTO foreign ministers on the need to unit efforts against COVID-19 will be published today.

The document stresses the leading role of the World Health Organization in the fight against coronavirus infection, CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas said when asked by BelTA.
