Bhandari re-elected as Nepali president for 2nd term

KATHMANDU, 13 March (BelTA - Xinhua) - Bidya Devi Bhandari was re-elected as the president of Nepal for a second term through a parliament vote on Tuesday.

An Electoral College comprising members of the federal parliament and provincial assemblies had cast their votes to elect the new president at the parliament.

The polling started at 10:00 a.m. and ended 3:00 p.m. local time.

Bhandari was backed by the two ruling parties Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist Leninist) and Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre).

Bhandari, 56, will be sworn in by the country's chief justice on Wednesday.

Nepal will be holding the election for the vice-president next week, authorities said here.

This is the second time Bhandari was elected as the country's president. For the first time, she became the president on October 28, 2015, a month after the country promulgated the milestone new constitution.

She is the country's first female president.
