Belarusian resolution on crime prevention adopted in United Nations

MINSK, 27 May (BelTA) - Belarus-sponsored resolution “Strengthening the engagement of all members of society in crime prevention” was adopted by consensus at the 28th session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) held in Vienna under the chairmanship of Permanent Representative of Belarus Alena Kupchyna, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.

The resolution on such topic was considered by the commission for the first time, the ministry noted. The document contains a number of action-oriented recommendations to promote the engagement of society as a whole and such its segments as governments, local authorities, educational institutions, families, non-governmental and faith-based organizations, and private sector in the common and important work on crime prevention. It also envisages a greater support by intergovernmental organizations, and first of all the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, of the national efforts.

The Belarusian resolution was co-sponsored by 23 states from all regions of the world (Austria, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, the United Kingdom, Italy, Kazakhstan, Canada, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Norway, Panama, Russia, El Salvador, USA, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay, Philippines, Finland, France, Sweden, Japan).

The widespread support of the new initiative of Belarus demonstrates recognition of the important role that Belarus plays in advancing the unifying agenda at the international level.

The UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice is one of the eight functional commissions of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and is based at the United Nations Office in Vienna. The CCPCJ is a central body of the UN system responsible for the formulation of international approaches in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice, including in such areas as the fight against transnational organized crime, corruption, human trafficking. The CCPCJ monitors the application of the relevant United Nations standards and norms, develops recommendations to counter new and emerging forms of crime.
