Belarusian MP comments on Kiev's decision to suspend contacts with Minsk

MINSK, 31 August (BelTA) – Deputy Chairman of the International Affairs Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus and the leader of the political party LDPB Oleg Gaidukevich made a few comments about Kiev's decision to suspend contacts with Belarus on the air of the Belarusian TV channel Belarus One, BelTA has learned.

The MP said he had been stunned by Ukraine's stance. “Ukraine said it has paused relations with us because it damages their image. At the same time extremists, nationalists shoot up a bus full of people. People were killed, people were injured, people were captured. Today I heard a statement made by one of the leaders of the nationalists, who said they are going to continue these actions. And the Ukrainian government tells us it will not talk to us because it is detrimental to their image. What kind of double, triple, and quadruple standards one has to have in order to speak such things?” the MP wondered.

According to the MP, there are no international principles left – only lies, geopolitics, and one's own interests. “There is nothing left. Who can we trust? The Middle East has been destroyed. Iraq, Libya, Yugoslavia have been destroyed. All of that was done for the sake of democracy, freedom, truth, fight for a bright future. And thousands of dead bodies. There was no democracy in the end,” he stressed.

BelTA reported earlier that the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released a statement in response to Kiev's one. “We fully share the thesis about the inadmissibility of any interference in the internal affairs of Belarus. This postulate is unshakable for us. At the same time we view assessments of Belarus' interaction with its allies and partners in integration associations and urgent calls for a new presidential election as an attempt to interfere in the internal affairs,” said Anatoly Glaz, Head of the Information and Digital Diplomacy Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It appears that the leadership of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs contradicts itself, Anatoly Glaz said. “It is hard for us to see this, especially since Belarus has never questioned, even in very difficult years for our Ukrainian friends, the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, the right of the people to choose their own ways of development. We have not participated, in any way, in inciting instability in Ukraine, or limited contacts with Ukrainian friends at any level,” Anatoly Glaz noted.

“On the contrary, we have approached (and will continue doing so) the cooperation with all our neighbors, especially Ukraine, carefully and prudently so that we would not have to cite emotions and geopolitical environment to excuse our mistakes,” he stressed.
