Belarusian foreign minister describes OSCE as hostage of geopolitics

MINSK, 6 December (BelTA) – The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) remains a hostage of geopolitics. Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei made the relevant statement at the 25th session of the OSCE Ministerial Council in Milan, the ministry's press service told BelTA.

Vladimir Makei said: “Unfortunately, over the past year we've moved even further away from observing the main provisions of the Helsinki Final Act and the Charter of Paris for a New Europe. We've been unable to resolve conflicts in the OSCE region. We have not reduced tensions. We have not created an atmosphere of mutual understanding and trust. Quite the reverse.”

In his words, the OSCE remains a hostage of geopolitics. “The dangerous buildup of military potentials and military presence near each other's borders continues. Domestic political ambitions and even personal ambitions prevail over interests of common security. The paradigm of conflict dominates the paradigm of building a society of security. We should stop thinking about deploying new military bases and infusing our region with lethal weapons. Such actions definitely fail to bolster common security,” said Vladimir Makei.

“We should not be fatalists when we talk about the resolution of conflicts, which may take human lives, when even a small spark can start a massive fire,” stressed the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs. “We cannot afford the luxury of strategic tolerance and idle contemplation when we talk about the promotion of an open, inclusive, and mutually respecting dialogue without an alternative.”
