Belarusian diplomat: EU should drop wishful thinking

MINSK, 21 December (BelTA) – The European Union should reconcile itself to reality and drop wishful thinking, Belarusian Ambassador to Finland and concurrently to Denmark Aleksei Samosuev said in an interview with the Danish newspaper Politiken, BelTA has learned.

“The EU cannot change the choice of the Belarusian people in favor of the current political system. It is time for the European Union to get in touch with reality and stop wishful thinking,” Aleksei Samosuev said.

He noted that the sanctions of the West did not throw Belarus into panic. “If the EU does not need us, we will continue to expand economic relations with Russia, China and other countries such as India, Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates. Of course, the European market is very important for us, but not as important as the ‘people in Brussels' would like to think,” the ambassador said.

The Belarusian diplomat emphasized that the country is proud of good relations with its closest ally and friend Russia. “In my opinion, any EU country is much more limited in its foreign and domestic policy and depends more on external factors than Belarus even in the current difficult situation,” he added.
