Belarusian ambassador presents credentials to Paraguay president

MINSK, 7 March (BelTA) – Ambassador of Belarus Vladimir Astapenko presented his credentials to Paraguay President Mario Abdo Benitez in Asuncion on 6 March, representatives of the Embassy of Belarus in Argentina told BelTA.

During a brief conversation after the accreditation ceremony Mario Abdo Benitez welcomed the appointment of the first Belarusian ambassador to Paraguay. He expressed interest in vigorous cooperation with Belarus in various spheres and readiness to assist with facilitating tighter bilateral cooperation.

Paraguayan Minister of Foreign Affairs Luis Alberto Castiglioni and other officials were also present during the ceremony. While in Asuncion, Vladimir Astapenko intends to meet with top officials of the Paraguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Agriculture and Livestock Ministry, and representatives of the private sector.

While working as the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Belarus to Argentina with concurrent accreditation to Uruguay, in 2018 Vladimir Astapenko was also appointed Belarus' non-resident ambassador to Chile, Paraguay, and Peru.

In 2018 Belarus-Paraguay trade totaled $15.2 million, more than 2.5 times as much as in 2017. Belarus' export reached $13.3 million, 237.5% as against 2017, with import at $1.9 million, 633.3% as against 2017. Foreign trade surplus amounted to $11.4 million.
