Belarusian ambassador: Closure of Belarusian-Russian border could have been avoided

MOSCOW, 10 June (BelTA) - The closure of the Russia-Belarus border initiated by the Russian side amid COVID-19 could have been avoided, Belarusian Ambassador to Russia Vladimir Semashko said during a video conference dedicated to the development prospects of the Belarus-Russia relations, BelTA has learned.

“Reporting on what has been done in 20 years [the development of the Union State] and analyzing the past events, we should say that some things were probably not done in the way they should have been or that they should have been done more successfully. A recent example is the coronavirus pandemic. Today we can say that we could have probably coordinated things better. Many years on and the border between Russia and Belarus have emerged closed, at least for a while (I hope it is a temporary measure). Perhaps, we could have come to an agreement. We could have made it more convenient for citizens of Russia and Belarus and for economic entities. Because we have created a lot of problems that hinder business over these past three months, and this measure may stay in effect maybe a month and a half more,” the Belarusian ambassador said.

“We could have avoided this,” the ambassador added.
