Belarus' Working Party on WTO sits in Geneva

MINSK, 18 February (BelTA) – The eleventh session of the World Trade Organization's accession working party for Belarus took place in Geneva, Switzerland on 15 February, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Belarusian delegation included top government officials. The delegation was led by First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Yeudachenka. He updated the attendees about the state of affairs in Belarus' economy, the progress towards the country's accession to the WTO and completion of bilateral talks on the market access with four WTO members. Andrei Yeudachenka called on the WTO parties to uphold Belarus' efforts to become a member of the organization, which could be done during the WTO Ministerial Conference in June 2020.

The meeting was attended by representatives of about 70 member states. Representatives of Australia, Argentina, Armenia, Brazil, Vietnam, the EU, Kazakhstan, Canada, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, USA, Turkey, Ukraine, Switzerland and other countries supported the accession efforts of the Belarusian government and expressed their readiness to work together throughout 2019 in order to complete the negotiation process as soon as possible.

The next meeting of Belarus' Working Party is to be held by the end of the summer of 2019.

In the run-up to the session, Andrei Yeudachenka met with WTO Deputy Director General Alan Wolff and Chairman of Belarus' Working Party Kemal Madenoglu. He also held informal consultations with delegations from the EU and the USA to discuss the further negotiation process.
