Belarus, UN sign plan of joint events to mark UN anniversary

MINSK, 18 February (BelTA) – Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei and UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki signed a plan of joint events on 17 February to mark the 75th anniversary of the United Nations in Belarus, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The plan was developed jointly by the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UN Office in Belarus. The document is centered around three remarkable dates that led to the establishment of the United Nations: the opening of the UN Conference on International Organization in San Francisco on 25 April, the signing of the UN Charter on 26 June and the day the charter entered into force and the UN began operations (24 October).

“Such a themed campaign is held in Belarus for the first time. The plan will make a meaningful contribution to the UN75 campaign that is meant to initiate dialogues in all settings. This campaign, the biggest in the UN history so far, was launched at the initiative of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres,” the foreign ministry noted.

Vladimir Makei underlined that Belarus was granted the status of the UN founding member in recognition of its contribution to the victory in the Second World War. Belarus recognizes the historical role and responsibility of the UN and its founding members for maintaining peace and will keep supporting the United Nations in its efforts to address challenges facing the humankind.

On the sidelines of the signing ceremony, the team of the UN Office in Belarus shared views on the state and prospects of bilateral cooperation, including plans to draft the UN program documents for Belarus for 2021-2025.

Taking part in the signing ceremony were heads of the country offices of the UN agencies (the United Nations Development Program, the World Health Organization, the UN Children's Fund, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the United Nations Population Fund, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS, the International Organization for Migration, and the UN Department of Global Communications).
