Belarus to continue fostering good neighborly relations with Lithuania

MINSK, 4 February (BelTA) – Belarus intends to continue developing good neighborly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation with Lithuania, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told journalists on 4 February following the meeting with his Lithuanian counterpart Linas Linkevicius, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei spoke at length about humanitarian cooperation with Lithuania. “Our humanitarian relations have always been characterized by close contacts and projects in a wide range of areas. Yesterday Linas Linkevicius and I visited a joint institution – the Lithuanian culture, education, and information center, as well as a kindergarten and a school with Lithuanian as the language of instruction in Rymdyuny. These institutions successfully promote the culture and preserve traditions and the language of the Lithuanian people in Belarus,” he said.

In turn, Vilnius is home to Francysk Skaryna Gymnasium with Belarusian as the language of instruction. “We are grateful to Lithuania for its support to this educational institution that provides education to 230 students. A lot of graduates of the gymnasium enter Belarusian universities,” Vladimir Makei noted.

He also pointed out that the two countries will mark an important occasion on 6 February – the 25th anniversary of the agreements on the good neighborly and friendly relations and on the Belarusian-Lithuanian state border. “These agreements laid the basis for the bilateral relations. Today our main task is to continue following the principles of good neighborly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation for the benefit of the two countries,” Vladimir Makei said.

He also spoke about the agenda of the talks with the Lithuanian minister of foreign affairs. It included the situation in the region, cooperation with the EU, NATO, and Belarus' accession to the World Trade Organization. Vladimir Makei thanked Linas Linkevicius for a sincere and meaningful conversation.
