Belarus to appoint ambassador to United States soon

MINSK, 30 June (BelTA) – Belarus will complete soon the domestic procedures to approve the candidacy for the post of the Belarusian Ambassador to the USA, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told journalists, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus is completing the domestic procedures to approve the candidacy for the post of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the USA. I believe that when the procedures are finished, and it will be soon enough, we will announce the name of the Ambassador. We want the Ambassador to arrive in Washington, the USA, and get down to work as soon as possible. The American party is also interested in this,” Vladimir Makei said as he spoke about the candidacy of the Belarusian Ambassador to the USA.

BelTA reported earlier that this year Belarus and the USA have stated their intentions to exchange ambassadors. In this repsect the U.S. side has been looking for a place to build the diplomatic mission.

U.S. President Donald Trump submitted for the approval of the United States Congress the candidacy of Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Europe and the European Union Julie Fisher for the post of the U.S. ambassador to Belarus. She may become the first U.S. ambassador to Belarus since 2008. Previously Julie Fisher was deputy chief of the U.S. Mission to NATO, charge d'affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Russia, and worked in the U.S. embassies in Georgia and Ukraine.
