Belarus ready to help Syria restore economy, social infrastructure

MINSK, 22 July (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to take an active part in the restoration of Syria's economy and social infrastructure, Belarus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media after his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Syria Walid Al Muallem on 22 July, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei named the development of trade and economic cooperation a priority for Belarus and Syria. The minister also expressed confidence that the prompt stabilization of the situation in Syria and the revival of Syrian business would help build up business activity.

“Belarus is interested in restoring the level of multipronged and mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation the two countries had before the armed conflict in Syria,” Vladimir Makei said. Today's Belarusian-Syrian talks focused on the ways to achieve this goal as quickly as possible. “We would like to assist actively in the prompt restoration of the economy and social infrastructure of Syria,” he added.

The parties consider the operation of the intergovernmental Belarusian-Syrian commission on trade, economic and technical cooperation as an important tool of cooperation.

“We supported our Syrian friends in the most difficult times for them and today, with peaceful life gradually coming back to the country, we are ready to take an active part in the restoration of Syria,” Vladimir Makei said.
