Belarus ready to expedite legal procedures for joining Shanghai Cooperation Organization

MINSK, 18 January (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to expedite the fulfillment of international legal procedures for joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as a full member. The possibility was mentioned as a protocol was signed after consultations between SCO member states and Belarus, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

The protocol signing ceremony took place after consultations between authorized representatives of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states and Belarus' authorized representative in Varanasi, India on 17 January. Head of the Central Office for Asia, Africa, and Latin America of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Igor Bely took part in the event.

Belarus has been a dialogue partner since 2010. The country became an official observer in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2015. The decision to start Belarus' admission to the organization was made at a session of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states in Samarkand, Uzbekistan in September 2022.
