Belarus president's meeting with current, ex-foreign ministers crucial to foreign policy continuity

MINSK, 18 January (BelTA) – The meeting of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko with the ministers of foreign affairs of sovereign Belarus is an important event for the purposes of continuity of the foreign policy. The statement was made by Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei, who took part in the Belarus president's meeting with the officials, who had been in charge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at different times, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei noted that the history of any country is based on accomplishments of previous generations. Modern Belarus would be impossible without the contribution of all the previous generations. “It is also true with regard to foreign policy. The head of state gathering all the ministers of foreign affairs of the period of Belarus' independence is a remarkable fact and a landmark event, particularly on the eve of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Belarusian diplomatic service,” Vladimir Makei said.

“If we couldn't rely on the results previously accomplished in the sphere of foreign policy, we would not have such authority, such accomplishments in foreign trade today – without the contribution of the former personnel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the former ministers of foreign affairs. This is why this meeting is an important event for the purposes of continuity of the foreign policy,” stressed Vladimir Makei.

“The president regularly talks to my colleagues to ask their opinion about steps we make in the international scene,” added Vladimir Makei. “I meet with the colleagues all the time at various events or jubilees in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or at state-level events.”

Vladimir Makei also noted that an association of veterans of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had been established and operates effectively. Regular meetings are held and opinions are exchanged about various matters within the framework of the association.
