Belarus-presided session of UN Commission on Crime Prevention opens in Vienna

MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) - The 28th session of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) began its work in Vienna on 20 May under the presidency of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus, Ambassador Alena Kupchyna, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Embassy in Austria.

The main items on the agenda items will be the contribution of the commission the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, preparation for the 14th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice due in Kyoto, 20-27 April 2020, the analysis of global trends related to the execution of crimes and new problems in criminal justice, fight against crime motivated by intolerance and discrimination. The CCPCJ will consider eleven draft resolutions on such issues as countering child sexual exploitation, strengthening the international cooperation to combat cybercrime, countering the smuggling of commercial goods, enhancement of transparency of judicial proceedings.

The Belarusian delegation has submitted the draft resolution entitled “Strengthening crime prevention through society-wide approaches”.

The session will hold 126 thematic side events, including a thematic discussion on the role of technology in facilitating and addressing sex trafficking organized jointly by Belarus, the UNODC, the OSCE and the international NGO Equality Now.

The CCPCJ is a central body of the UN system responsible for the formulation of international approaches in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice, including in such areas as the fight against transnational organized crime, corruption, human trafficking. The CCPCJ monitors the application of the relevant United Nations standards and norms, develops recommendations to counter new and emerging forms of crime.

Belarus has been a member of the CCPCJ for the past ten years. The representative of Belarus heads the ECOSOC functional commission for the first time.
