Belarus, Poland working to sign about 10 cross-border agreements

MINSK, 7 December (BelTA) – Belarus and Poland are working to sign about ten agreements on cross-border matters, Belarus' Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Evgeny Shestakov said at the 13th meeting of the Belarusian-Polish intergovernmental coordination commission on cross-border cooperation in Minsk on 7 December, BelTA has learned.

Addressing the participants of the meeting, Evgeny Shestakov said: “Belarus considers this mechanism as one of the key tools in ensuring the ongoing dialogue between specialists of the two countries to coordinate actions on the development of border regions of Belarus and Poland, secure the normal functioning of the border, which is also the border of the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union, work to prevent disasters, develop the belt of good neighborly relations and contribute to the regional stability in Central and Eastern Europe.”

The deputy minister stressed that since the previous meeting in Polish Augustow in May 2017, a positive trend has been achieved in working contacts with the involvement of stakeholders from both the sides. It is important that the interaction, as well as the climate of trust and mutual understanding between the two countries, established during the past meetings help carry out systematic work.

Belarus hopes to continue cooperation between regional administrations, chambers of commerce, business associations, educational institutions, and the implementation of agreements between twin cities.

Evgeny Shestakov emphasized the importance of regular work of subcommissions. The next meeting of the subcommission on border checkpoints and infrastructure is scheduled for early 2019. “Its work helps us remove a significant amount of issues related to the border,” the deputy minister said.

Over the past year and a half Belarus and Poland have done a lot to improve the legal framework of bilateral cooperation. “In the pipeline are about 10 agreements on cross-border issues. We will do our best to ensure they take effect in the coming years,” said Evgeny Shestakov.
