Belarus MP blames European side for canceled meeting with MEPs

MINSK, 26 February (BelTA) – A meeting with a delegation of the European Parliament was supposed to be held at the House of Representatives of Belarus on 26 February. However, the meeting was canceled through the fault of the European side, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives Andrei Savinykh told reporters, BelTA has learned.

“This meeting will not take place through the fault of the European side. We were ready for the dialogue in the context of the traditional values of Belarus' foreign policy. We extended our hand for a handshake, but unfortunately received no response,” Andrei Savinykh said.

“Anyway, we will remain committed to our open policy. We still hope that one day our European partners will realize the importance and value of this approach,” the MP emphasized.

The delegation of the European Parliament came to Belarus to study the state and prospects of Belarus-EU relations.

The MEPs that were supposed to take part in the meeting included Vice Chairman of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Belarus Valdemar Tomasevski (Lithuania), Vice-Chair of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with Belarus Karin Karlsbro (Sweden) and Rapporteur on Belarus of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament Petras Austrevicius (Lithuania).
