Belarus, Monaco discuss opening of honorary consulates

MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) – Belarus and Monaco are discussing mutual opening of honorary consulates, outgoing Belarus' Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to France with concurrent accreditation to Spain, Portugal and Monaco Pavel Latushko said in an interview to The Times Magazine.

“Honorary consulates can become one of the instruments to promote our cooperation. Their opening in both the countries is under discussion,” the diplomat said.

In his words, despite the fact that Belarus and Monaco established diplomatic relations not long ago (in April 2016), the history of bilateral cooperation had started much earlier. “In 1935 Prince Louis II of Monaco visited Nesvizh Castle on the invitation of Albrycht Radziwill. One of the reasons of his visit was hunting. Perhaps, they also discussed relations between the two well-known European families and also matters of wider cooperation,” the diplomat said.

Pavel Latushko said that today one of Belarus' major priorities is economic diplomacy. “We are interested in developing relations with the Monaco Economic Board. The first Belarus-Monaco business forum took place on 30 January 2018. We agreed to hold another forum in Belarus in 2019,” he added.
