MINSK, 17 March (BelTA) - The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights continues to reproduce lies and slander about Belarus and its government, reads a statement by the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva on the occasion of the publication by the OHCHR of the so-called report on "human rights violations" in the context of the presidential election in Belarus in 2020, BelTA has learned.
"Both the press release and the report continue to reproduce lies and slander about Belarus and its government. The report serves as a tool for lobbying the anti-Belarusian agenda of Western countries in the UN and the Human Rights Council. OHCHR continues to protect those who failed to undermine the Belarusian state and illegally seize power in 2020 by participating in mass riots, directing anti-government protests, inciting hatred in society, using violence and threats against law enforcement, government officials, pro-state journalists,” the diplomatic mission said.
The Permanent Mission of Belarus drew attention to the fact that many of those who are described in the OHCHR report as "victims and witnesses" were brought to justice for specific crimes. Some of them fled abroad and are now gathering "evidence of regime crimes", under the guidance of their sponsors, for such reports spreading disinformation and lies as a means of revenge and pressure on Belarus.
The discussion of the report in the Human Rights Council is scheduled for 22 March.
