MINSK, 11 July (BelTA) - Tehran hosted the fifth round of political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran on 10 July. The parties expressed satisfaction with the state of political contacts and interparliamentary cooperation, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.

The Belarusian delegation was headed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Dapkiunas. The Iranian delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araqchi.

During the consultations, the parties discussed the issues on the bilateral agenda, expressed satisfaction with the status of political contacts and interparliamentary cooperation, highlighted the importance of the preparation for the 15th session of the mixed Belarusian-Iranian commission on economic cooperation scheduled for October 2019. The need to step up work to improve the legal framework of bilateral relations was also emphasized.

Andrei Dapkiunas and Abbas Araqchi had a substantive discussion of the international and regional issues. The parties agreed on the need to ensure strict compliance with international law, to use exclusively diplomatic methods to resolve the controversy around Iran's nuclear program and to maintain regional stability and security. Andrei Dapkiunas noted that the escalation of the situation around the joint comprehensive plan of action was yet another clear demonstration of the relevance of the Belarusian president's idea to start a broad dialogue in order to restore the international security system, particularly in the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian regions.

In the course of the visit Andrei Dapkiunas also met with Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif. The parties positively assessed the status and prospects for the Belarusian-Iranian relations.
