Belarus FM: Belarus is actively involved in dialogue on human rights with USA

MINSK, 3 February (BelTA) – Belarus is actively engaged in the dialogue on human rights with the United States of America, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at the joint briefing with U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo following the meeting with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 1 February, BelTA has learned.

“We are actively involved in the dialogue on human rights with the United States of America. We are engaged in this dialogue not just for the sake of the dialogue, but to discuss specific issues and to find appropriate measures to improve the situation in this area. We are not standing in one place, we are going forward. I believe that we will gradually reconcile our positions on the remaining issues,” Vladimir Makei said.

He noted that democracy and human rights were also discussed in depth during the talks. “Belarus might not be an absolutely ideal country in this respect. We do understand that we should undertake reforms in some areas,” Vladimir Makei said. “We are working on it. In line with the recommendations of the United Nations, we have developed the national plan on human rights, and we are implementing it quite successfully together with the non-governmental organizations,” he added.
