Belarus explains decision to send ambassador for WW2 commemoration in Warsaw

MINSK, 29 August (BelTA) – Anatoly Glaz, Head of the Information and Digital Diplomacy Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, explained why Belarus will be represented by the ambassador at the events marking the WW2 outbreak anniversary in Warsaw on 1 September, BelTA has learned.

Anatoly Glaz noted that several days ago the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement that clearly explained its stance on this matter. “No need to engage in conspiracy theories. Naturally, we appreciate the invitation of the Polish side. However, the topic of the Second World War, the Great Patriotic War, is sacred to us and we have always had a clear-cut approach to it. I would like to reiterate that absolutely all the nations of the Soviet Union made a decisive contribution to the common victory over the Nazism,” he said.

Anatoly Glaz emphasized again that the liberation of Central and Eastern Europe, the crushing defeat of the Nazism in the territory of Germany became possible due to heroic efforts of the multi-national Red Army. “It would be wrong from the historic perspective to interpret this fact differently and to divide the contribution of the USSR republics to the common victory. However, invitations to Warsaw were not sent to Kazakhstan, Central Asian countries and Russia,” he emphasized.

At the same time, taking into consideration that the war affected the territory of Belarus from the very beginning, our country accepted the invitation to take part in the anniversary observances. We see our participation in the commemorative events in Warsaw on 1 September as a tribute to all the victims of the first stage of the Second World War,” Anatoly Glaz said.
