Belarus expects Armenia to schedule meeting with its candidate for CSTO SG office soon

MINSK, 14 February (BelTA) - Belarus hopes that Armenia will set the date for a meeting with State Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council Stanislav Zas soon, Anatoly Glaz, Head of the Information and Digital Diplomacy Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told a press briefing in Minsk on 14 February, BelTA has learned.

As it was reported earlier, Belarus nominated Stanislav Zas for the post of the CSTO Secretary General. Stanislav Zas already held meetings with the heads of five member states and they supported his nomination, Anatoly Glaz said.

As is known, Armenia wishes to retain the chairmanship in the CSTO until 2020.

“The CSTO has been working without the secretary general for a long time already. This situation does not benefit the organization and needs to be resolved as soon as possible. More so that the CSTO heads of state spoke in favor of the candidate from Belarus at the meetings in Astana and St. Petersburg,” Anatoly Glaz said.

The spokesman recalled that back in December of last year, on the instruction of the president of Kyrgyzstan – the CSTO chair at that time, the CSTO Secretariat prepared the necessary draft documents to appoint Stanislav Zas Secretary General.

“Stanislav Zas immediately visited the five capitals to meet with the heads of state. All the presidents supported his candidacy. In light of the fact that last December Armenia held parliamentary elections and then was busy forming the government, we were understanding towards the fact that the prime minister did not have the opportunity to meet with the candidate. Now this period is over. We therefore expect Armenia to schedule this meeting soon,” Anatoly Glaz said.

The spokesman stressed that Belarus looks forward to constructive interaction with Yerevan. “We hope we can find common ground. The Secretary General post of the international military and political organization is not a hotel room that you can book, even if you do not have the opportunity to use it again,” Anatoly Glaz noted.

He stressed that the CSTO Member States would not want this technicality to affect the work of the organization and bilateral relations between its members.
