MINSK, 17 December (BelTA) – The visa facilitation and readmission agreements between the European Union and Belarus might become effective in 2020, Evelina Schulz, Head of Political, Press and Information Section of the Delegation of the European Union to Belarus, told reporters on 17 December, BelTA has learned.

“The year 2020 can become a momentous year for the implementation of the agreements on visa facilitation and readmission. However, everything will depend on when these documents will be signed. If they are signed (I really hope for that), these agreements will come into force after their signing, i.e. in 2020,” Evelina Schulz said.

When asked about the status of the readmission agreement, Evelina Schulz noted that it “is getting ready to be signed”. “We expect this to happen in the near future,” she said.

A reminder, the Council of the European Union approved a decision to sign the visa facilitation agreement with Belarus. In September, Belarus completed the domestic procedures on the visa facilitation and readmission agreements with the European Union. The head of state made a decision to sign the visa facilitation and readmission agreements with the EU. This step was preceded by a long negotiating process with the European Union, which resulted in mutually acceptable texts of the agreements.
