Belarus, EEC to hold forum on SDGs in Minsk

MINSK, 27 September (BelTA) – Belarus plans to organize a forum on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said in his statement at the General Debate of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei noted that Belarus has been actively involved in various regional integration processes and has consistently advocated the need for various integration associations to work in partnership and achieve compatibility. In 2020, as chairman of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Belarus plans to hold the first forum on Sustainable Development Goals in Minsk in cooperation with the EEC.

“The event will help our EAEU partners compare notes and exchange experience of work to achieve SDGs. It will also enable the Eurasian Economic Union to speak with one voice in the global debate on the implementation of the Agenda for Sustainable Development, addressing common problems and at the same time emphasizing the diversity of the EAEU countries,” Vladimir Makei said.

According to him, Belarus believes that regional economic organizations should be actively involved in efforts to achieve SDGs and contribute to harmonizing economic policies of states that are parties to integration associations in order to promote sustainable development. “This will help bring about the multiplier effect for national economies which serve as load-bearing structures of the whole system of regional and global sustainability,” Vladimir Makei added.
