Belarus eager to host parliamentary conference to discuss WTO development

MINSK, 20 January (BelTA) – Plans are in place to hold a parliamentary conference in Belarus in April to discuss prospects of transformation of the World Trade Organization. The idea was discussed at a session of the International Affairs Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus on 20 January, BelTA has learned.

Participants of the conference are expected to discuss peculiarities of the WTO's development at present from the point of view of Belarus' accession to the organization. Prospects of the WTO's transformation will be discussed as well. Chairman of the International Affairs Commission Andrei Savinykh noted: “We would like to touch upon an entire stratum of economic matters of international nature relating to access to markets, trade wars, and barriers.”

Belarusian MPs intend to organize the conference in association with the WTO Secretariat and look forward to the arrival of the organization's deputy director general to Belarus.

Apart from that, the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament intends to host a seminar in March to discuss priorities of international parliamentary cooperation for the sake of Belarus' development in a nascent multipolar world. Scientists and political analysts are expected to be invited to participate in the discussion.

According to Andrei Savinykh, the House of Representatives of the National Assembly is interested in as effective contacts with foreign colleagues as possible. “We expect a favorable public environment for perceiving Belarus to evolve, which will help find partners for development projects,” he stressed.
