Belarus counts on Germany to help improve relations with EU

MINSK, 30 September (BelTA) – The government of Belarus counts on Germany's assistance in promoting relations between Belarus and the European Union, Belarus Prime Minister Sergei Rumas said as he met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Belarus Manfred Huterer on 30 September, BelTA has learned.

“I hope that in this role you will help build momentum in our relations with the European Union. Germany plays a key role in the EU and naturally it has substantial influence on the EU policy,” Sergei Rumas said.

The Belarusian head of government expressed hope that economy will be a priority for Germany's new ambassador. Sergei Rumas noted that more than 300 companies with German capital operate in Belarus. Germany is a major trading partner of Belarus. At the same time, Sergei Rumas believes that a lot of opportunities are still ahead.

“Belarus-Germany cooperation in trade, economy and investment has great potential. We are happy about the results achieved by the Belarus-Germany working group on trade and investment. We would like this group to pass its best practices to the working group on sci-tech cooperation; we are waiting for it to resume its work. We would also like the Business Cooperation Council to step up its activities. We remember the years when this organization was very active in promoting the interests of Belarusian and German business people,” Sergei Rumas said.

Manfred Huterer confirmed Germany's commitment to expanding trade, economic and investment ties with Belarus. This matter was discussed during the 10th Day of German Economy in Belarus.

“In recent years our relations have made substantial progress and not only in the economic sector. We maintain a close political dialogue between the governments. I am really glad that Vladimir Makei will come to Germany soon to meet with his German counterpart,” the ambassador said.

Manfred Huterer noted that a solid foundation is needed for cooperation. “Last year we managed to stand up to the challenges and will keep doing it, however, for that we need a very strong economic and social foundation,” he said.
