Belarus calls for increasing UN's role in strengthening peace, security

MINSK, 27 September (BelTA) – The next anniversary summit of the United Nations should contribute to a considerable increase of the UN's role in strengthening peace and security, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs said in his statement at the General Debate of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, BelTA has learned.

Dozens of local conflicts are tearing the world apart and a lot of them may escalate into a new global war, Vladimir Makei said. He stressed that Belarus advocates resolving both frozen and ongoing conflicts only through negotiation and on the basis of fundamental principles of international law.

“Today we find ourselves in a situation of contradictory and dangerous realities. It is crystal clear that we need to find responses to common challenges before these realities lead to disastrous consequences. I believe that many will agree that this is not the situation in which the international community would like to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations next year. The anniversary summit should provide a powerful incentive to the search for responses to the challenges and should contribute to a considerable increase in the UN's role in strengthening peace and security, resuming a dialogue, restoring trust, and, most importantly, preventing the threat of a global conflict,” Vladimir Makei said.

Belarus would like to encourage world leaders, who will gather in this hall in one year's time, to focus on these issues. “If the anniversary summit becomes just another protocol-type event, everyone will lose: both the organization and all its members. The ominous ghost of World War III may then become a reality,” Vladimir Makei noted.

Over the past few years, Belarus has been strongly advocating the need to stop confrontation and resume a broad dialogue on the key issues of international security. Belarus believes that such a dialogue will enable everyone, above all, great powers, to find a way to agree on how to preserve peace and respond to global challenges together.

“Events that occurred in recent months prove right those who, like Belarus, have consistently championed a new negotiation process similar to the Helsinki process in the mid-1970s which would stabilize international relations, strengthen international dialogue and increase predictability,” Vladimir Makei said.
