Belarus calls for global dialogue on security at IOM event in Geneva

MINSK, 27 November (BelTA) – Belarus called for the need to launch a global dialogue on security at the session of the Council of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Geneva, BelTA learned from the Belarusian embassy in Switzerland.

“The 111th Session of the IOM Council is held online on 24-27 November. Head of the national delegation, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus in the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva Yuri Ambrazevich made a speech at the general discussion,” the diplomatic mission said.

In his words, the permanent representative focused on the assessment of the IOM work amid the coronavirus pandemic and informed about Belarus' approaches to counter this challenge. The head of the Belarusian delegation welcomed the role of IOM and the UN migration network in conducting regional reviews on implementation of the Global Agreement on Migrants.

Yuri Ambrazevich also stressed the importance of addressing the root causes underlying the significant increase in forced displacement of people in the world, especially wars and conflicts. In this regard, the permanent representative focused attention on the Belarusian initiative to launch a global dialogue on security as a tool to address many transnational challenges and threats, including the problem of mass forced displacement.
