The desire to promote Francysk Skaryna's legacy unites men of letters from different countries, Nikolai Cherginets, Chairman of the Writers' Union of Belarus, told reporters as he attended the international roundtable discussion Accord: Skaryna's Word in Modern World on 3 September.

Nikolai Cherginets noted that not only writers, but also readers in different countries realize the importance of promoting the legacy of Francysk Skaryna. Today it is important to help words sound in a different way and revive the demand for the legacy of the Belarusian first printer and enlightener. A lot has already been done. Works by Belarusian writers have been translated into 15 languages. In many cases, that was done on the initiative of the partner countries.

Nikolai Cherginets noted that writers from different countries have a number of common concerns. For instance, how to publish books under the modern conditions? The problem is that today the state is unable to provide support to all writers. The Writers' Union of Belarus already has experience in publishing works by young, emerging writers and is ready to share it with colleagues.

Representatives of the Writers' Union of Belarus were also interested to learn how the professional status of writers is supported in other countries. The thing is that to earn decent money, today writers need to do something else in addition to their primary trade, Nikolai Cherginets said.

Minsk hosted a meeting of writers from 14 countries on 3 September in anticipation of the Belarusian Literature Day.
