War veterans teach us how to take care and look after the country and the city, Vitebsk Mayor Viktor Nikolaikin told the media before the solemn reception for war veterans, BelTA has learned.

The reception in the city hall brought together about 20 war veterans. Viktor Nikolaikin noted that the war veterans are in the center of attention not only in the run-up to the festive dates. Government, public and veterans' organizations, social services, enterprises provide them help on a regular basis, meet with them to see how they live and what kind of help they need. “We need to learn from the veterans how to take care and look after the country and the city. With every year the veterans get fewer. I am very happy that you came to meet us today. We are grateful that we can live in a peaceful and prosperous country, make plans for the future, bring up children and grandchildren,” the Vitebsk mayor said.

Participant of the Great Patriotic War Aleksandr Blagov was a bomb technician as part of the 3rd Belarusian Front. “I lived through a lot of things and I am happy I survived. I used to approach the enemy's trench so close that I saw the light of a cigarette in the hand of a German,” the 93-year-old war veteran recalled.

“The main thing is the peaceful sky over the head. We need to cherish peace and live in harmony with everyone, find solutions to problems in a peaceful matter since the war claims lives,” Aleksandr Blagov said.
