Vitaly Busko: MPs should not be deterred by the lack of a parliamentary body in the EEU

The lack of a parliamentary superstructure in the Eurasian Economic Union should not curb initiatives of Belarusian and Armenian parliamentarians. The opinion was voiced by Vitaly Busko, Deputy Chairman of the International Affairs Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, during the ninth session of the Belarus-Armenia interparliamentary cooperation commission on 29 June, BelTA has learned.

Vitaly Busko said: “We face new challenges brought about by Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union. We believe that interaction within the framework of the Union is of current interest. The lack of a parliamentary superstructure in the Eurasian Economic Union should not curb initiatives of Belarusian and Armenian parliamentarians. We should combine our efforts and find possible avenues of cooperation for the sake of providing effective assistance to interstate dialogue, primarily in trade and economic sphere.”

In his opinion, consistency, continuity and the mutual desire to make concessions in decision-making are required for the successful development of the Eurasian Economic Union and integration in the broad sense. The bona fide honoring of the commitments undertaken within the framework of the integration process is as important. “I am convinced that these simple truths should be at the foundation of our cooperation on the whole and the Eurasian parliamentary diplomacy in particular,” noted the Belarusian MP.

Vitaly Busko said that vigorous interaction within the framework of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe is a testimony to the mutual understanding of Belarusian and Armenian MPs in the European direction, however, there is yet untapped potential in another interparliamentary structure — the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. “Belarus is interested in advancing pragmatic cooperation with the Council of Europe and its charter bodies,” stressed the MP.

In his opinion, interaction between Belarusian and Armenian MPs in the Eastern Partnership Initiative is also important. “With their own views on participating in the Eastern Partnership Initiative, Belarusian and Armenian MPs were united [during the Riga summit in May 2015] in believing that every country requires a special approach. Understanding the peculiarities of every country can secure a successful and mutually beneficial dialogue within the framework of the Eastern Partnership Initiative,” Vitaly Busko was convinced. He went on saying that it is necessary to be more active within the framework of the geopolitical group Eurasia. Using the group’s potential can be very productive for promoting joint interests of Belarus and Armenia in the international scene.
